HARRISON, AR. - On Wednesday, April 29, the local Lions Club was the site of two significant community announcements. Judge Mitchell Archer and Judge-Elect Tyler Gentry signed a special document, known as a proclamation, to officially recognize National Fentanyl Awareness Day.
The proclamation highlighted the serious impact of fentanyl, noting that it is now involved in more deaths of Americans under the age of 50 than any other cause. This includes major health issues like heart disease and cancer, as well as incidents like homicide, suicide, and other accidents. Kyle Evatt and Courtney Roberts were present to represent NAPHE (North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education) at the signing, which took place at the Northwest Arkansas Economic Development District (NWAEDD) office.
In addition to the proclamation, Mayor Jackson took the opportunity to thank the Lions Club for their generous partnership and a substantial donation of $35,000. This money will help create a new public space in downtown Harrison, currently known as the "Pocket Park" or "Hole in the Wall."
This upcoming "Lion's Den" park will be located between the former Walter's Building and a new restaurant opening soon, sharing space with Provalus. The design for the front area, facing downtown, includes tables and chairs for people to gather, large decorative rocks, and various activities. A mural depicting the history of Harrison will also be a key feature. For convenience, a public restroom will be available and maintained by the city's Parks Department.
Mayor Jackson expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, "This will be a space we can be proud of, and we hope all citizens and visitors will enjoy the area and return many times. We are excited to open the Lion's Den this summer."
